Seeing tactics blindfolded: fork, pin, skewer, discovered attack

Blindfolded you do not "see" a tactic, you DEDUCE it from geometry. Two signals catch most of them.

The problem to solve

This is the payoff of the previous lessons (colors, bishop, knight, memory): once you hold the position in your head, you must find the winning moves in it. Typical question: "in this position, is there a tactic for White?"

The central idea

A tactic is GEOMETRY. Two signals raise most of the opportunities: pieces that are aligned, and pieces that are undefended.

The core: the two signals of the tactical radar

Start from the targets, not from your piece

To find a fork, do not walk your knight's eight squares hoping to land on something. Take the two targets and ask which square attacks both: there are rarely more than one or two. Then check the knight can legally get there, and that the square is safe, or that the move is a check they cannot answer by taking it.

Before any calculation, sweep two things.

Signal 1: UNDEFENDED pieces (LPDO). "Loose Pieces Drop Off": an undefended piece is the easiest target there is, and it is the number one cause of lost material. Count the defenders that can actually defend: a piece pinned to its king defends nothing off the pin line, and one already busy holding something else defends nothing at all. After every move, mentally sweep the loose pieces of BOTH sides.

Signal 2: ALIGNED pieces. Two enemy pieces on the same line (file, rank, or diagonal) = a pin or a skewer in the making. A piece aligned with the KING = a tactical check is possible. Watch alignments involving the king and the queen first.

These two signals lean directly on the previous lessons: spotting a diagonal alignment is the bishop lesson, a rook line is trivial, target colors come from the colors lesson, and the knight's reach from the knight lesson.

The 4 motifs to recognize

The fork. One piece attacks two targets at once. The knight is the king of forks: it jumps, so no open line is required. Blindfold detection: compute the knight's jumps (8 from the center, fewer near an edge); if two of them land on interesting enemy pieces (especially king + heavy piece), it is a fork.

The pin. Two enemy pieces sit on the same line as your bishop, rook or queen. The front piece (less valuable) cannot leave the line without exposing the one behind (more valuable, or the king). It is pinned. How much that costs depends on the piece: a rook or a bishop can still slide along the pinning line, a knight or a pawn usually cannot move at all, because nothing they can play stays on that line. Absolute pin: the king is behind, so leaving the line is illegal. Relative pin: a valuable piece is behind, moving costs material. Blindfold detection: look for two enemy pieces aligned on one of your lines, the cheaper one in front.

The skewer (the pin reversed). Same alignment, but the valuable piece is in front. You attack it (often with check); it has to step aside, and you take what was hiding there. Note that the piece behind does not need to be undefended: a rook that wins a queen is a good trade whoever recaptures. Detection: identical to the pin, but the value is in front.

The discovered attack. One of YOUR long-range pieces (bishop/rook/queen) aims at an enemy target, but it is masked by one of YOUR OWN pieces. When the blocker moves, the attack is discovered. The point is to make that blocker do something of its own on the way out: then one move carries two threats. Extreme cases: discovered check and double check. Detection: spot your long-range pieces whose line to a target is blocked by your own piece; moving the blocker releases the attack.

A check has exactly three answers

Capture the checker, block the line, or move the king. Name every legal one before you look further, and remember the two exceptions that shrink the list: a knight check cannot be blocked, and a double check can only be answered by a king move.

To miss no tactic, examine moves from most forcing to least forcing:

  1. Checks: they restrict the king first.
  2. Captures: they test material changes.
  3. Threats (violent ones): they create the pressure.

The order matters: a forcing move limits the opponent's replies, so it calculates more reliably blindfolded. It is the antidote to "I do not know where to start".

The safety scan (after the opponent's move)

A reflex to install, especially blindfolded where you do not see danger coming. After every opponent move, three questions:

  1. Does this move attack one of my undefended pieces?
  2. Did it open a line (discovered attack)?
  3. Is one of my pieces now hanging, or indirectly threatened?

This sweep catches the majority of avoidable blunders.

Recommended training progression

  1. Recognize the 4 motifs on diagrams (the visual above).
  2. The LPDO sweep: on a position, list out loud every loose piece of both sides.
  3. Knight forks blindfolded: from a square, does the knight hit two targets?
  4. Tactics from notation (no board): read a position, find the motif, then verify.
  5. Daily puzzles: 5 to 10 a day to engrave the patterns.

Common mistakes

  • Calculating before sweeping. Diving into a line without having checked loose pieces and alignments. The two signals come first, always.
  • Sweeping only one side. The LPDO scan applies to the opponent's pieces AND yours.
  • Skipping forcing moves. Without the CCT order you miss the check that wins.
  • Ignoring your own lines (suffering a discovery): the opponent can discover an attack too.
  • Mixing pin and skewer: it is the position of the valuable piece (behind = pin, in front = skewer).
