You see a position, then a number of moves are played that you follow in your head without the board updating, and you solve the puzzle in the position you arrive at. The setting that controls everything here is how many moves you visualize before answering. At three it feels like normal calculation. At six or seven it becomes the thing most club players never practise deliberately, which is why their calculation stops being reliable at exactly that depth.
The reason this drill is worth its own place in the ladder is that it isolates depth. Every other exercise makes the position harder by adding pieces. This one keeps the position where it is and pushes how far ahead you have to hold it, which is the variable that actually decides whether you can calculate a forcing line to the end in a real game. Raise the move count one step at a time and only once the current setting feels unremarkable, since jumping straight to seven teaches you nothing except that seven is hard. Each extra move carries a rating bonus, so depth is rewarded rather than just punished.
